Transitional dreads with swirled tips

First off I give credit of the tecnique to a lady on the fakehair community named Frau and this is her tutorial http://community.livejournal.com/fakehair/2886499.html.

So this is how I make my swirled transitionals. This is a lot of work!

Tool:

A felting needle- I use a 36g that is for corse fiber so their is bigger barbs to catch the hair.

The Hair:

You need 5 pieces of backcombed hair per dread. I'm making a chest length dread so I use half the length of a pack for the base and 1/4 of the length of the pack to make the tips. I was able to make 16 tips out of 1/2 a pack of hair.

So to make 40 dreads you need 200 pieces of back comed hair

So that's why this is time consumeing.

On to the tutorial!

Step one: Take one of the tips and place it on the backside of the dread towards the end of the base dread. Make sure you leave enough overlap so the fibers can hold together.

Step two: Place the second piece on top of the dread towards the end of the base dread but inline with the bottom dread.

Step three: Now place your fingers so that the chunk of hair you want to felt together is in between them.

Step four: Now take your felting needle and stab through the hair in random spots in a quick manor.

It will look like this once you have stabed it a few times.

Step five flip over the dread and you will see the fibers sticking through. Repeat Step four on this side as well but you do not need to felt it af much.

This will help the fibes bond to the base hair for a secure hold.

Step six: Now twist it up! I always let it twist up back on it's self for storage purposes.

Repeat steps one - six to opposite side and your ready to seal!

Trouble shooting on the twist:

Ok this happens often with this type of transitional where the base hair wants to pop out the side like this...

To stop this from happening this is what you do.

Step one: Untwist so that a small piece of the base hair is visable

Step two: Tuck the hair inbetween the other two colors you are twisting. When you twist make sure the tip of the base hair stays tucked in.

Voi La! it dissapeared!

So this....

Turns to this for storage...

Then turns to this once it they are all sealed...

Hope you found this useful!!!!!

Comment's a questions please leave here http://delicstutorials.livejournal.com/5487.html thank you!

How To Make: Curly Dreads

Here's a different way of making curly dreads where you can do 12 at a time with out waiting for them to dry out.

First you need the right tools

1) Aluminum tape- can be found at any hardware store
2) Dowel rod- you can use any size to achieve the curl size you want....mine is 3/4 inch
3) a bunch or small rubber bands

The dowel rod needs to be coverd with the aluminum tape so that the moisture doesn't get absorbed into the wood. That will cause your curls to stay wet much longer than needed.

To cover the rod peel off the backing of the tape and place it on length wise. This will take far less time and material than wraping would. You will have to do the once on each side of the rod according to the size you get.

Should look like this when done

Once your rod is all done you are ready to begin.

Step 1: Place the end of your dread on the top of the rod and secure it with a rubber band.

Step 2: Hold the top of the dread and begin to wrap the dread around the rod to the other end.

Step 3: Slide a rubber band from the other end of the rod (it is easier that way and they slide quite well if you pull it up) and secure the other end.

Step 4: Continue to these steps until the rod is completly covered.

Step 5: Time to seal! Just hold the rod over the steam and make sure you give it plenty of time in the steam so that it penatrates the dreads. They should be hot to the touch all around the dread.

Step 6: Let them cool down completely which only takes a minute or so.

Step 7: Time to see those curls! Take off the rubber bands securing the dread and hold the dread in your hand.

Step 8: Slide the dread off of the rod.

Step 9: Voi la! You got yourself some beautiful curly dreads!

I hope you found this tutorial helpful! Godd luck!

How To: Put on a pair dread falls that are mounted on lace

I know this one is needed and I did all the pictures a while ago but decided to finaly get this done. I hope this will help some people out.

This tutorial can be used on other types of falls mounted on lace as well. The important part of the tutorial is the proper placement of the buns on the head. Some steps can be skipped but I did this so it's completly from begging to end type of tutorial.

Warning: Lot's of pictures! Not the best pictures either since i had to take them myself while trying to do it as well.

The Buns-Important tips and placement of the buns.

Step 1: You need to make a part in your hair down the center of your head all the way back and loosly tie them so they are in separate sections so you can work with them easily.

Step 2: Pull your hair up and secure a high ponytail on top of your head. Note the placement of it.

Step 3: Twist hair into a bun. All you need to do to make it is twist the hair and wrap it so that it doesn't untwist and forms the shape.

Should look kinda-sorta like this after it is secured with a thick hair tie.

Step 4: Important is the placement of this bun! You need the weight of the falls to be balanced on your head. If it's back to far your neck will hurt like hell. If it's too low it looks silly and it will pull on the roots of your hair. The bun need to be where your head starts to flaten out. Just feel your head and you should find it.

Step 5: Secure the bun with hair pins. This helps keep it sturdy and make sure you do not put the pins in close to your head!!! When the weight of your falls smashes down on your head they will press right into your head....it hurts....trust me.

Step 6: For thick hair like mine I make the base a little more sturdy with wraping the hair with some stretch lace. It also hides the fly aways and the color of my hair. You could use panty hoes too for this.

Step 7: If I accomplish anything with this tutorial it will be PLACEMENT! This is how the buns should look on top of your head. I have long thick hair so my buns are always on the high side no mater what I do but you should try to get them as compact as you can.

Putting on the hair

At this point you should be fully dressed and have your headband on.....it is very difficult to get anything on over your head once the dreads are on.

Step 1: The fun part is getting it on top of your head. All you do is make sure the dreads you want on top and facing foward are in the right position and then put the base of that on top of your bun like so....

Step 2: Now wrap the lace aroun the bottom of the bun (the end toward your ear) and then bring it up and tie it. Don't tie it underneath cause the knot can press into your head from the weight. Also don't tie it tight it can actualy pull your hair tighter on your head causing one heck of a headache.

Step 3: Taking the extra lenght of the ends criss cross them and wrap around the oposite bun and back up and tie it. Making a figure eight on the top of your head helps with the weight and to keep it steady.

Step 4: Repeat Steps 1-3 for second fall. Make sure the falls feel steady and your not in pain before you do the next steps. It easier to undo the falls at this point to correct any problems.

and you should look like this...

Step 5: Secure the bottom layer of dreads around your bun. This hides your hair color and keeps your top layer of dreads from showing off those pins and keeps them fre moving.

Step 6: To help hide the nice part look on your head I criss cross a few dreads from each side and then pin them in the center.

Step 7: Voi La you are done! Now take some pain killers if your not used to the weight of the falls. It takes some time to get used to the weight but pop some pain killes to help with the headache you will get...it's inevitible...but if you do this right and your falls are shorter then waist length you can do this with out pain. This set always kills me to wear it. My shorter sets I have no problems with pain. PLACEMENT is key to all of this plus the security of the fall to your head. Have fun and good luck!

I hope you all find it useful!

How to: Seal Single Ended Dreads

A little complicated but not that hard to do...enjoy!

The Tools:

1) Dread Hook: This is a tool I just made today. It is a broken piece from a plastic hanger. You want to make sure that you have it so that their is a hook at the end. You need this to help seal the dreads and to maintain the loop.

2) A tea kettle on the stove with boiling water.

3) Yellow cleaning gloves-for protection from steam burns.

Ok now to start

Step 1) While the water is boiling on the stove thread the loop onto the dread hook. Push it down so that the looped part is in the crook of the hook.

Step 2: Put on your gloves and start to seal the dread using my tea kettle method mentioned in previous tutorials. http://delicstutorials.livejournal.com/3238.html

Step 3: A good way to make it easier on you is to use the dread hook to help spin the hair and it is also very handy to seal the loop. Make sure you seal the loop as well to keep it's shape.

Step 4: Let the dread rest after you have completly sealed it still on the hook untill it's cool.

Step 5: Now take it off and you will see a nice loop on the end.

Step 6: Trim off the stray hairs and you have yourself a nice looking single ended dread! If you could feel this dread it is solid! That's why the special step in the last tutorail is so important.

Thanks for reading my tutorials! If they have worked for you please let me know!

How to Make: Single Looped Dreads

This has taken me a while to finally get made. This will show you how to make the dreads with the loop on top...enjoy!

Ok to get started you will need:

1) The hair- 100% kanekalon Jumbo Braid

for this demonstration I am using bits of stray hair I had from previous projects. I saved them just to make this tutorial. I haven't made single enders in a long time so I am just using the leftover bits sice I have no plans to make any at the moment. FYI the colors are neon violet, uv orange, highlighter yellow, black, and neon green.

2) Backcombing Brush

3) A card table with lace/string tyed to the legs- This is helpfull cause you can lay stuff on the table as you work and it is used in creating the dreads.

Ok now to start

Step 1: Take your length of hair and thread it through the back of the lace

Step 2: Fold the hair over the lace in half like so.

Step 3: Backcomb the hair starting at the base and work to the tip

Step 4: Do the same to the underside and the sides of the dread....this way you get the entier dreads backcombed...otherwise it will not work.

Step 5: Take the end of the brush handel and stab it through the hair all over from bottom to tip. This helps to make the top and back piece stick together so when you seal the dread it is nice and solid. ***This is a handy step that can be used on making de dreads too!***

Step 6: Twist it up.

And your done!!!! Congradulations you are now ready to seal it.

How to: Seal the ends of dreads using a tea kettle

First the tools:

Tea Kettle-with lid on on high heat on the stove. Picture is showing water level.

Card table, gloves, cloths pin, and sealed dreads. Notice that the hair in the picture has not been sealed. I was just too lazy to take a different picture.

Put on your gloves!!!

Step 1: Take your cloths pin and clamp it down to the end of the hair.

Step 2: Lay the hair over the spout of the steaming spout of the tea kettle.

Step 3: Twist the hair up really fast since there is less hair than in the dread. You need to twist this hair a lot since it is so small.

Step 4: Once it is all twisted and steamed you are done. All you have to do is trim off the end.

Glove method

Step 1: Grab the far end of the hair and hold it on the spout of the steaming tea kettle.

Watch your fingers cause the steam is hot!

Step 3: Once it is all twisted and steamed you are done. All you have to do is trim off the end.

And now that you are done with your dreads you can store them in a safe spot, construct them into a fall, or instal them!

How to: Seal Swirled Dreads

This tutorial details how to seal swirled dreads using my special tea kettle method. In order for this to work you need a similar tea kettle to do it. This is the one that I use.

I got it from Big Lots for $5.99. The brand is Bali and the style is Victoria.

This is the same tutorial as the last one but with different pictures and some additional steps.

On with the tutorial…

The tea kettle is the most important tool you have cause it is the one that seals your hair. Mine is extra special cause the lid does not fit tightly and the steam spews out of the side of the kettle. If you can get a kettle that does the same GET IT!!! Other wise this tutorial is useless to you.

Step 1: Fill your tea kettle with water and put on high on the stove with the lid on. This picture is showing the water level.

Step 2: While that is heating up get out a card table and set it up behind you and a clean towel on the floor underneath you. The towel is there if you have to re-twist the hair.

Step 3: Gather your stuff. You will need a pair of yellow cleaning gloves, a cloths pin, and the twisted hair.

Step 4: Once you see the kettle steam up put on the protective gloves.

Step 5: Position the lid so that the steam is coming straight out towards you but towards the spout.

Step 5: Hold onto both ends of the twisted dread and pull to stretch the dread out for sealing. If you need to re-twist it just re-twist it on the towel.

Step 6: Start in the center of the dread and lay the hair on the kettle next to the steam.

Step 7: When you see the hair shrink up twist with you left hand counter clockwise towards the steam. This makes the dread. It keeps it tight and rolling it on the kettle while steaming it smoothes it out.

Step 8: This is a constant motion and is done quickly. You must move along the dread feeding the hair from the top of the kettle to the back of the kettle while steaming and twisting until the whole thing is sealed.

During the process the hair starts to overlap the other and you will lose the swirled look. That is because of the hair shrinking. All you have to do is step on the already sealed hair and re-twist the rest of it on the towel.

Step 9: With this dreads you may need to seal it longer. I use the spout steam to go over it a few times to make sure it is sealed good enough.

It is also a good thing to let the dreads rest and cool down and then seal it again.

Step 10: You must keep an eye on the water level! This is evaporating water and won’t last forever. You can seal 4 dreads with one pot of water in this kettle.

And now you’re done! All that is left is to seal the ends. This will be explained in a different tutorial.

Mine is extra special cause the lid does not fit tightly and the steam spews out of the side of the kettle. If you can get a kettle that does the same GET IT!!! Otherwise tip the lid slightly off so that steam can come out the side or modify the lid to do so.

If you want this tea kettle I will be offering beginners kits that will include the tea kettle, gloves, cloths pin, 1 packet of hair, and a backcombing brush. You would have to pay the cost of the items plus shipping.

Step 1: Fill your tea kettle with water and put on high on the clean stove with the lid on.

Step 9: You must keep an eye on the water level! This is evaporating water and won’t last forever. You can seal 4 dreads with one pot of water in this kettle.

And now you’re done! All that is left is to seal the ends. This will be explained in a different tutorial.

How To Make: Swirled DE Dreads

This tutorial will try to explain how to make swirled/candy cane dreads.

For the first part of the tutorial please refer to the “How to make solid double ended dreads” tutorial from the beginning all the way to Step 5.

http://www.livejournal.com/users/delicstutorials/1752.html#cutid1

***Important Note Please Read!!! ***

You must divide the hair that you used for the single colored dread in half so they end up the same thickness. If you don’t the dread will end up double the thickness of the single colored dread.

Step 6: Repeat steps 3-5 (from http://www.livejournal.com/users/delicstutorials/1752.html#cutid1) on a different color of hair that you want to swirl with the first color.

I am using Sassy brand in color 614 (platinum blond). And I am making this dread in marker thickness for added variety in thickness for the fall.

Step 7: Once you have both pieces of backcombed hair done gather them up and step on them both at one end with the colors side by side.

Step 8: Place your right hand on the dead and twist counter clockwise (important in using my teakettle method to seal the dread). Use the left hand placed in front as a guide to how the colors are being twisted and smoothing it down. Your thumb controls where the color goes. This is hard to explain but I hope from the pictures you can put it together.

If you don’t like how the twist looks just untwist and start again. Practice makes perfect!

Step 9: Refer to http://www.livejournal.com/users/delicstutorials/1752.html#cutid1 step 7 and 8

Now you have your dreads all ready to be sealed!</span>

How to make: Solid Double Ended Dreads

This tutorial is on how to make solid double-ended dreads.

**Warning**

This is very detailed and full of pictures. Prepare for lots of reading and pictures downloading.

First things first…

The Supplies

Hair

You will need 100% kanekalon jumbo braid.

Kanekalon is the fiber and Jumbo is the texture. As long as the hair fiber is 100% kanekalon that you have the correct stuff to work with. This fiber seals with hot water, which is important in sealing the dread. Jumbo Braid hair is best to work with cause of the texture makes backcombing easy.

For this demonstration I will be using Zury brand in the color Gold.

Speaking of backcombing…

You will need a backcombing comb

This is the one I use. I got it from Sally Beauty Supply. It has 3 rows of teeth, a handle, and is made of a more durable plastic that ordinary household combs.

Now on with the tutorial…

Step 1: Take the hair out of the package and decide what length and thickness you are going to make the dreads. All the info give below = one packet of hair

To make that hair the length you want

For…

Long hair: Leave it the entire length that it is in the packet

Medium length hair: Cut the hair in half in the middle or where the hair is tied off at the top with a rubber band.

Short length hair: Cut the hair in half and then in half again.

Thickness

For maker thick dreads you can get

2- Long = waist length DE’s

4- Medium = shoulder to chest length DE's.

8- Short = ear to chin length DE’s

For about pencil thick you can get

3- long length DE's

6- medium length DE's

12- short length DE’s

Divide hair into bundles accordingly to the numbers next to the thickness and length you want.

For this demonstration I am making medium length pencil thick dreads.

Step 2: Clean your feet! This is what you will be using to hold the hair down to backcomb it. Also put on some comfortable cloths. I like work in my pajama pants and a t-shirt.

Step 3: Take your bundle of hair and step on the middle of the hair with your left foot (If you are right handed). Then hold the hair on the left side of your foot tight (Again if you are right handed). If you’re a lefty just do the opposite.

Step 4: Now backcomb the hair.

Place the teeth of the comb into the hair at a downward angle

Next push the comb down the length of the hair to rat it up.

If the hair gets too messy or knotted at the bottom just pull the hair back up and comb again. Its good to start at the bottom and work your way up.

Step 5: Once that side is done do the same to the other side, but step on the backcombed hair so you can get all the hair backcombed. It should look something like this.

You may find that the hair is longer that when you started (notice the very bottom of the picture showing the backcombed hair next to the cut hair). That is because when you pulled the hair while backcombing some of the hair pulled up from its original position. This is good if you want the hair to be a little longer or to layer the dreads. If you don’t like it just pull the dread apart and backcomb again.

Step 6: Now once you are satisfied with how the hair looks backcombed now you can twist the dread up.

Place your foot at one end of the backcombed hair. Then begin to twist the hair starting near your foot. Then place you right hand on the dread and twist then with your left hand in front of the right smooth down the dread with your thumb while you roll it. It looks like this…

Twist it all the way to the top.

Step 7: Keep the dread twisted

Ok this can be a problem. I first used books at either end to pin the hair down to keep it twisted. It didn’t work very well. Then I didn’t keep I twisted after I spent time twisting it and that was a pain when it cam to sealing. So I stumbled onto this just recently and this work great.

First hold the end of the hair you just twisted tightly and then hook your other finger in the center of the dread and then grab the other end with the same fingers that are holding the other end and hold it up. It should look like this.

Then unhook the finger at the bottom and it should look like this.

Step 8: Lay the dread down in a safe spot and move onto the next dread. This is a good way to store a bunch of dreads at once and seal them later.

Voi La! You’re halfway done! Now you can seal your dreads!

See how to seal dreads using my special teakettle method in the next tutorial!

This is the best for making dreads. Kanekalon is the fiber. Jumbo Braid is the texture. You can also use the silky texture but you do need to backcomb more.

I would search my local area for beauty supply shops and see what they have to offer. Sally Beauty Supply mostly has a very limited selection but a good price for hair.

The best places online for hair:

USA
(Washington) Doctored Locks aka Doc Locks: http://www.drlocks.net/ the one i use
(California) Black n' Gold Brand hair: http://www.bnghair.com/bnghair/detail.asp?catid=1&subcatid=28&itemid=001 great colors and good prices. For an estimate on what you can make and how much you need this is what I can get out of each packet of hair.

For marker thick dreads you can get- 2 waist length double ender dreads or if you cut the hair in half to make medium length double ended dreads you can get 4.5 double enders(DE's).

For about pencil thick you can get- 3 waist length DE's and 6 medium length DE's

This goes for single enders as well.

Backcombing

I suggest this comb from Sally Beauty Supply

This comb is called a backcombing brush. It only cost about $1.50 if I remember correctly. It has 3 rows of teeth and is a more durrable plastic than ordinary combs.

Sealing

I would tell you to get a tea kettle for sealing dreads.

I would get this one. I got it at Big Lots for $5.99 and it's awesome. The Brand is Bali and the style name is Victoria. It's the best and I will explain that in the tutorial I will make.

So then you will also need rubber gloves to protect your hands from the steam. Get the yellow cleaning gloves you can get at a store. Don't get the really cheap ones go for the more expensive ones cause they fit your hands better.

I am suggesting this method cause the other ones have their flaws

Boiling- the dreads look like crap cause they get all stringy...I have done this...trust me. You can steam the dreads first then pour the boiling water over the dreads to seal them even thighter.

Hairdryer=Velcro hair they stick to one another

Flat Iron- Can't seal the ends well

Professional steamer- expensive, more likely to burning yourself all over, bulky, and break down after a while.

If you want to try these methods go ahead. This is just my opinion and what I have read from other ladies posting sealing problems on the LJ communities.

You will also need:

Storage containers to store your hair, dreads and falls in.

Hair rubber bands-for installing dreads

Sissors- For cutting hair, trimming sealed dreads, and other uses

Black Lace- For mounting Falls

So here is the basic info that you need to get started. This can be a very pricey hobby to get into I have $100's invested in it. I hope you found this helpful and if you need any more info just ask.

~Andrea~

delic1999

This is a quick tutorial I whipped up. This is for those that want more coverage with their falls or have small bun diameters.

First Step: Take your DE fold it over and rubberband the top to make a loop. **If using single enders omit this step**

Step 2: Cut two equal lengths of lace/stretch lace.

Step 3: Thread on the first dread onto both pieces of lace. This dread becomes your anchor.

Step 4: Thread on dreads on to the separate pieces of lace.

Step 5: Keep threading on dreads reserving one for the other anchor.

Step 6: Thread on last dread onto both pieces of lace(see step one). Then sinch up the dreads to the lace by pulling both sides like you would to tighten a pony tail.

Step 7: Smoosh all the dreads together as tight as you can. Then tie a knot to the anchor dreads.

Step 8: Voi La! You now have a full and layerd fall to wear.

***NOTE*** To add extra stability to the fall use a small piece of string and tie the two layers together. Just take the string inbetween a section of dreads and tie a sturdy knot then cut off the excess. I usualy do this in the middle and then near the ends so it's tied off in three sections.

Layered Dreads:

To make the dreads have a layered look just uses short length and medium lenght dreads on the front strand of lace and medium and long ones in the back.

These falls are compleatly versitle and non-perminatnt. To change them up all you have to do is untie the ends!Hope this was informative and useful for you!

~delic1999~
